Term 4

week 1

mon-had our first lession on soils with Roger,The nuitrients and liquids that are held in soils are what plants eat,so is obvisally has to be a big part of our knowledge in this field!learnt alot about what nutrients comes from where eg:rocks hold lots of minerals inside them!learnt about soil layers and ages, went on fieldtrip!

tues-weeds with Roger,a weed is a plant that it is were its not wanted!learnt some interesting facts like some plants are nitrogen fixing

wed-caught up on a bit off study, had progress revue-& Alex reconds im pretty much upto date!so goodgood-for lunch we had a beautiful bbq to welcome all the new students

thurs-grape prunning at the block with a very knowledgable man called Uuen somthing,& learnt pretty much how to prune grapevines perfectly

fri-absent due to flu

had a great holidays, caught up with family, went 2 dunedin 4 a week and did some fishing and just hung near the sea,was so good to be in some warmer weather away from fog! ūüėČ

mon-had dentist in morning!ouch!to my mouth & the bank!~

then headed down to the block & learnt how to prune grape vines back leaving two sprigs which you twist round the wire for next years growth, best to choose sprigs that are either side of the vine base thet are closest to wires twisting vines round wires provents wind damage

tues-Organic certification         organically you have to be very careful about what you put on organic crops, best to check with certifiers before u add any substance or something your not sure about to your crop,as if you put something thats not completely natural on you mite have to start your certification from scratch & it takes 3 years to get certified again, also things are getting banned all the time,so you dont get caught out you can check up on websites such as summerfruit nz or nz foodsafty websites

wed-missed out on fieldtrip to qt so worked on my p&d assignment all day

thurs-in propergation today we broke off lilly bolblets & put them in vermiculite to develop into bulbs, also planted last years students bulbs into gardens around the polytec, they should produce flowers around had planted some Galtonia candicans from seed so we potted them up in 10cm pots

fri-prunning a

mon-absent due to tane

tues-Organic certification, covered rules & regulations & ways of the certifiers certenz,Demeter,Bio-gro,for instance Deneter uses biodynamic methods, they have very different methods & beliefs which many people find strange,Waynes viewed many of the orchards & said there all very healthy orchards which produce amazing fruits,so its al in the evidence ae!

wed-today in propagation we potted up deciduous hardwood cuttings such¬†as:¬† Ribes`magnus’¬†¬†¬†¬†blackcurrant-¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† fig `Lesa’¬†–¬†¬†Parthenocissus quinquefolia & semi hardwoods-Heliohebe hulkeana-¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬†¬† Hebe cupressoiae`nana’¬†¬†¬†¬†

in the arvo we used a flat grey 20ml  stonechip mulch to  cover around the plants in  some of the native gardens at tek here(crushal to claer around the stems/trunks to allow watering and avoid p&d.This mulch comes from Gibston  quary ,Near Wanaka theres another quary the has a more browny stonechip, located @ the crawford hills quary,These chips are very heavy to work with & also very expensive  but the pros defently weigh it up as it generly doesnt host pests &diseases, birds cant move it round when their looking for worms as its to heavy, weather wont move it,and it looks great!

fri-In morning we went through some slides, also covered some rose pruneing on them,Pruned peach trees, getting quicker & better at it the more we do it,was very very frosty & foggy in morning but cleared to be a nice day.

mon-was absent due to moving house
